Our Fashion-Month Runway Event in New York
We started Riya Collective with the mission to make South Asian formalwear more widely accessible, and every so often, we are reminded of how many people share our desire, and broader passion for incredible South Asian design. Our 2021 fashion show, on the heels of New York Fashion Week, was a truly unforgettable event largely for this reason. It was both exhilarating and humbling to dress up in our swankiest South Asian formalwear; come together with other attendees of the sold-out show, also decked out according to our swanky dress code; and celebrate the incredible pieces that India-based designers have been dreaming up.
Our show was the first of its kind featuring South Asian designers, and though none of them were able to attend due to COVID, their colorful creations set a truly electrifying tone for the evening. Shloka Khialani lehengas, Pratyusha Garimella kurtas, Anisha Parmar earrings— seemingly every piece on the runway prompted enthusiastic cheers from our audience, themselves dressed in stunning pieces such as cutout blouses, inventive drapes, saris paired with leather pants. There was a similarly electric energy as host/emcee Anisha Ramakrishna ceded the stage to DJ USA, who showcased its inspiring lighting design; Twinjabi and DJ Dr. Srimix, who performed fusion pop and hip-hop for the crowd; and popular street-food vendor Desi Galli, who offered pico de gallo pani puri to our guests.
